Rotate PDF Pages

Rotating changes the display orientation of pages in a PDF. It's a metadata operation — the actual page content is not re-rendered, so there is zero quality loss. Rotating is the correct fix for scanned documents where pages came out sideways or upside down, PDFs from mobile devices with incorrect orientation, or any document where the page layout doesn't match the intended reading direction.

Scanned documents are the most common culprit. Place a sheet of paper sideways on a flatbed scanner and the resulting PDF page will be sideways too. Mobile scanning apps — including the built-in iOS and Android document scanners — sometimes misinterpret orientation, especially with landscape-format documents or older paper that's slightly warped.

Another frequent source is PDF export settings. Some software, particularly older versions of Excel and certain CAD applications, export landscape spreadsheets or drawings as portrait-rotated PDFs because the export function defaults to A4 portrait regardless of the original layout. The content itself is correct but appears rotated 90 degrees.

Email-to-PDF workflows are also problematic. When someone photographs a document with their phone and sends it as an image, the EXIF orientation data — the metadata that tells your phone which way up the photo was taken — can get stripped when the image is converted to PDF. The result is a PDF where pages appear sideways or upside down even though the original photo looked fine.

Whatever the cause, the fix takes seconds. Upload the PDF, choose your rotation angle, and download the corrected version. Your original file is untouched.

This is worth understanding because it affects quality expectations. When you rotate a page in a PDF, you're not re-rendering the content. You're changing a number in the PDF's page metadata — specifically the /Rotate entry — which tells PDF viewers how to display that page. The actual content stream is identical before and after rotation.

This is very different from rotating a JPG image, where pixels are physically rearranged and image quality can degrade slightly with each operation. PDF rotation is lossless by definition. A document rotated 10 times will be identical in quality to one rotated once, because no pixel data is ever changed.

The practical implication is that you can rotate PDFs as many times as you like without any concern about degrading the document. Scanned PDFs, generated PDFs, and PDFs with embedded images all rotate equally well.

One nuance: if your PDF has a mix of correctly and incorrectly oriented pages, the current tool lets you rotate all pages, odd pages only, or even pages only. True per-page rotation selection is on the roadmap.
